A career in International Development: panel discussion with Hub researchers

LIDC and the Action Against Stunting Hub are holding an online career event for students with an interest in international development who want to find out more about a career in academia.

The panellists will discuss their career paths and share advice on how to start or transition into a career in research. This is a brilliant opportunity for those looking to gain an insight into what a researcher actually does on a day-to-day basis, how to become a Research Fellow and the role research plays in addressing wicked problems.

Speakers:

Anouschka Ramsteijn, Darius Tetsa Tata, Catherine Antalek and Dinesh Yadav from the UKRI GCRF Action Against Stunting Hub.

Dr Anouschka Ramsteijn is a Research Fellow at the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health, University of Aberdeen. Anouschka is interested in mechanisms of perinatal programming of long-term (brain) health outcomes. She completed an MSc in Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences and a PhD in Neurobiology at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Following a Fulbright Visiting Scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania, she defended her thesis “Antidepressant use during pregnancy: Exploring novel (neuro)biological effects in rat mothers and offspring”. Currently, Anouschka works as part of the AASH, collaborating with researchers in India, Indonesia, and Senegal on epigenetics and the microbiome.

 

 

 

Darius Tetsa Tata is a Data management Research Fellow at the LSHTM. Before joining the Department of Population Health where he works with the AASH Hub, he was at the Department of Clinical research where he led data management activities on multiple complex multi-partner consortium led projects implemented in LMICs. Darius has extensive technical and operational skills gained from several years of practicing as a clinical data manager and an IT manager for clinical data management systems. He has experience in a wide range of clinical research designs and of computing skills; which include software engineering, statistical computing, Data sciences, biostatistics and systems and network administration. Darius holds a Master’s Degree in computer science from the university of Yaounde I, where he is currently doing his PhD in Data Science.

 

Originally from upstate New York, Catherine Antalek has recently been awarded a PhD in cognitive neuroscience from Brunel University London. She is currently working as a researcher at UCL as part of the education and cognition workstream for the Action Against Stunting international collaborative research project. Catherine’s main research interests include the cognitive processes of reading development for typically developing, dyslexic, and bilingual readers (also EAL). She is specifically interested in the role that a language’s orthography (spelling system) plays in phonological and visual processes. The aim of these investigations is to contribute to the literature in identifying literacy deficits to provide evidence-based curriculum and interventions for individuals diagnosed with dyslexia and to develop assessments and interventions for English second language learners with reading.

 

 

D M Dinesh Yadav is a Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Research Fellow at the UKRI-GCRF Action Against Stunting Hub. Dinesh holds an MSc in Genetics from Osmania University. Dinesh started his career at the National Institute of Nutrition, India, where he researched the genetics of obesity and chronic diet restriction. He also worked on a maternal and child health project at Gandhi Medical College. Before moving to the UK, Dinesh was a manager in India for the Action Against Stunting Hub, where he supported the PI at NIN in identifying the project priorities, developing work plans, allocating resources, budgeting, procurement, reporting project performance and risk prediction and mitigation. He helped develop monitoring and quality control protocols, organised training and established a comprehensive system for case management in Commcare, a data collection tool.
