Developing Gut Health Biomarkers to Identify Stunting

Ritu Sharma

INDIA

Ritu’s experience from her PhD research in the area of reproductive biology secured her role with the Action Against Stunting Hub as a Post Doctoral Research Associate. She is based at ICMR National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad, India.

Since 2021, Ritu has worked within the gut health and microbiome workstream. This area of study has involved developing gut health biomarkers to identify children who are already on a pathway to stunting. This information is then used to support families in addressing stunting amongst babies and children.

Ritu has benefitted from training on microbiome data analysis led by University of Aberdeen, where she has enjoyed learning about community-based studies and data handling.

"The project has been good exposure for me in the area of community based study and data handling; really helpful for data analysis experience to help me find the next opportunity to use my experience."

Ritu was surprised by the confidence boost her public engagement and communications training from Science Made Simple brought her. The materials she prepared and the part she played in engaging families at India Science Festival as part of the Hub team brought new insights,  perspectives and interpersonal skills.

" I have gained more confidence and potency in public relations and communication."

She has enjoyed the experience of working on a multi country project and looks forward to future opportunities to use the experience that she has gained from this project.
