Saving SDG2: from innovation to action

The legacy of Covid-19 will live on for decades. The millions of additional children that will be stunted as a result of the pandemic will live lives in worse health, with shorter education and lower incomes.

Recent data from UNICEF  shows that due to the pandemic, 6 to 7 million additional children under the age of 5 will suffer from severe malnutrition in 2020, a 14% rise that will translate into more than 10,000 additional child deaths per month – mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

This raises the question: has the pandemic completely sabotaged the possibility to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by 2030? The goal was ambitious from the start.

Now eliminating global hunger before the end of the decade is a pipe dream. Can we accept that the SDG2 will not be achieved? Two critical Lancet papers (1; 2) have called for increased attention and investment for alleviating hunger, but will this be enough? How long will the international community need to get back on track?

This event, in partnership with LIDC, will bring together a group of international leading experts in nutrition, food systems and health focusing on the SDG2 and its specific targets to further explore what the international community can actively do to tackle these issues.
