Focus of research:Improving gut health to improve growth

Steve is currently based in The Gambia as a Post Graduate Medical Trainer and Consultant Paediatrician at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, Banjul, and continues as a Professor of Paediatrics, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK. He is also the current secretary of the Commonwealth Association of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (CAPGAN: http://capgan.info/). Steve’s main research interests are in paediatric gastroenterology with a focus on interventions to improve gut health across a broad range of conditions including malnutrition and inflammatory bowel disease. As Gut Health Workstream Lead for the Action Against Stunting Hub, he is evaluating the inter-relationships between gut health and the gut microbiota, enteropathogen colonisation, epigenetics and other workstreams and also evaluating an early-life synbiotic in Senegal (SENGSYN). The role of early life supplementation with pro- and synbiotics in improving gut health is also being evaluated in western Kenya (PROSYNK).
